CAREER DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE - Year 2006

2006 Chair:
Mike Helm, mike@brookslodden.com

Committee Members:

Foster Trust:
  • Create the Vision
  • Set the expectations
  • Always have an agenda
  • Tell what I will do. Do what I tell.

Vision:
We are a proactive center to make a career in financial planning attractive and achievable. Our vision is to provide support for those who are new to, or are considering entry into, the field of financial planning. It is our hope that, in the future, we will be able to provide similar support to those in the middle of their careers, as well as to those transitioning out of financial planning.

Developing the Strategy:

  • Vital Few
    • Create an awareness of FPA as a method of Career Development
    • Make alliances with higher education
    • Provide educational opportunities
  • Provide mentorship/internship opportunities
  • Critical Success Factors
    • Work with other FPA committees to create an excellent career development program
      • Sponsorship
      • Membership
      • Program
  • Identify your allies
    • Other FPA committees
    • Iowa State University College of Business
    • Iowa State University College of Family and Consumer Science
    • Keir Educational Resources
  • Provide classes for the comprehensive CFP® exam
  • Administer scholarship program to promote the attainment of the CFP designation
  • Serve as a liaison between universities with financial planning and related finance programs to promote student attendance at FPA of Iowa events

Energizing Alliances:

  • If FPA committees work together, we will all realize bigger achievements:
    • Iowa State University Colleges will:
      • Have opportunities for student mentorship and internships
      • Job possibilities
      • Opportunity to recruit FPA members to their Masters and MBA programs
    • Keir will have the profitability from the classes

Activating Transformations:
Each member of this committee will take a personal inventory of why they chose to volunteer in FPA of Iowa and what it was about the Career Development Committee that interested them.  Each member will share with the committee at large the degree of commitment they are willing to make, personal goals they are setting for their time with us, an accountability plan they believe will be most effective for our members, and policies and procedures most in need of improvement.

Achieving and Measuring Results:

Our committee recognizes that it is hard to quantify the success of our efforts.  However, some of the metrics that can be applied to our work to measure success are:

  • Increased student involvement in all FPA of Iowa activities
  • Increased applications for CFP scholarships
  • Utilization of the programs and resources available to local chapters from National FPA.
Sometimes the best measure of success is the satisfaction committee members feel about their work.  I cannot claim to be able to measure this, but if, as a committee, we are satisfied with our efforts and results then I think you can say we are, at a minimum, headed in the right direction.
